Algeria’s long and colorful history has seen everything from the Carthaginians to Barbary Pirates to French Existentialists. In the 19th Century, Algeria went through significant upheaval – the French conquered the country in 1830, ending over 300 years of Ottoman rule. For Algeria’s Jews, who’d lived there since the Roman Empire, French occupation marked the beginning of the end of their time in Algeria.
